I return to my room, closing the door behind me and resting my back against its surface. My eyes close as I slump, glad to be alone. I wish that the effects of the wine would pass. That unease. That fear. It was so strange.

The ceiling above glistens like a magical night sky. The fire still burns in the fireplace, and the room is warm and welcoming. I sit on the edge of my bed, the wine making me hum, and now that I’m alone, I have neither the inclination or the energy to return to the party.

I look at the bath and remember the blissful effects the lotions and salts had on my body. The aches from the stones that crushed me in that pit and the dirty feeling I have from what just happened in the great hall, demand a bath.

Reid killed that man. I was so angry. Overcome with wrath as I heard the same sentiments from him that I’ve heard so many times before.

From Darius whenever he caught me at school. From the old man when he would sell me to pay off his debts. From the Authority. And from Jonah, most of all.

You should be grateful. Glad. Thankful.

But to actually kill him, one of our own. Was that right?

I turn on the taps and let the bath fill up. I roll my neck and shoulders, hoping to ease my muscles a little and replace the sounds of screams and sobs with the gushing water instead. I strip off and sink beneath the water, keeping the taps running.

Bliss.

Well and truly clean, relaxed and fresh, I step out and wrap myself in the silk robe. In the corner of the room are the bags we brought with us when we fled. As I get closer, I realise how they stink. The scent of the cottage, the asylum, the sweat and fear… it oozes from the bags. Not something I find myself too enticed towards, now that I smell of vanilla and flowers.

I keep on the robe and walk around the room, looking at the art on the walls and the meticulously carved stonework. It’s all so beautiful. So grand.

I know we are safe here. Everyone can sleep easy, knowing that nothing is expected from them other than to protect and look out for each other. Ezra’s reaction was a surprise. I half expected him to defend his man. He didn’t. He was genuinely disgusted, and so he should have been.

And that Arch. A gateway to the Fae Realm and a one-way ticket out of here.

We finally have a chance. A real chance.

I stop at the wardrobe doors and rest my hand on the handles.

Before I can talk myself out of it, I open them up. Ahead, a fireplace springs to life and a chandelier hangs overhead. The room is cast in a warm orange glow of firelight. I step inside. To my left hang countless gowns. And to my right hang countless tunics. Shirts. Trousers. Exquisite cloaks and majestic jackets.
